The Saturday Ritual
It's Saturday. 11 am. The family is hungry, everyone's craving a good desi buffet. Someone says “there was a deal somewhere” — and the search begins.
You open WhatsApp. First group — 200 messages since last night, mostly cricket memes and good morning forwards. You scroll. No deal. Second group — someone posted a biryani special last Tuesday, but it was a one-day thing. Third group — someone asks if anyone knows a good deal. Seven replies, all different restaurants, none with actual information about what's running today.
You switch to Facebook. The “DFW Indian Food Deals” group has 47,000 members. The last real deal post is three days old. You scroll through birthday announcements, recipe shares, and arguments about the best biryani in Dallas. Ten minutes gone.
Someone in the family says “just check Telegram.” So you open Telegram. Three channels, none of them updated this week.
It's now 11:45 am. You've spent 45 minutes on 4 platforms across 7 groups and channels and still have no confirmed deal. But you find one promising post from Thursday — “$10.99 lunch buffet, all you can eat, Friday and Saturday!”
The Drive
You convince the family. Google Maps says 23 minutes. Not bad. Everyone gets in the car — kids, parents, maybe a couple visiting from out of town you want to impress with “a great deal spot.”
Traffic on 75 is slower than expected. You arrive at 12:38 pm. The restaurant looks good from outside — busy, which you take as a good sign.
You walk in, a family of five or six. The host greets you. You say: “Hi, we saw the lunch buffet deal online — the $10.99 one?”
The host looks uncomfortable. “Oh, that was last weekend, a special promotion. We don't have that today. Regular buffet is $16.99 per person.”
The Burn
You look at your family. Six people. $16.99 each. Kids are hungry. You drove 25 minutes. You're not driving back without eating. The visiting relatives are watching.
So you stay. You sit down. You order. The food is decent — honestly, probably the same food as the deal would have been — but the feeling is different. You came for a deal. You're paying full price. You feel like you got played by your own hope.
The bill comes. Over $120 for the family, plus tip. You smile. Everyone smiles. But inside you're doing the math on what you thought this was going to cost, and what it actually cost.
On the drive home, someone says “we should have called ahead.” You say “yeah.” But you've said that before. You always forget. Because you shouldn't have to call ahead. The information should just be there.
This wasn't a one-off. This happened again. And again. To us, to our friends, to practically everyone in the community who actively tries to find good deals before committing to a restaurant. The platforms weren't built for this. Group chats aren't databases. Telegram posts don't have expiry dates.
The deals were real. The restaurants wanted customers. But the information lived in a hundred fragmented places — and by the time you found it, half of it was out of date.
